What is Rail & Roadside Vegetation Management?
Highway and rail vegetation work brings additional regulatory and operational requirements: New Roads and Street Works Act (NRSWA) accreditation, lane closures, Chapter 8 traffic management, sight-line specifications, and where rail-adjacent, RISQS-style procedures.
We carry out roadside tree work for parish councils, landowners with hedge frontages on classified roads, and as subcontractor to highways framework contractors. Rail-adjacent work via Network Rail-approved partner where access requires it.
All work documented to highway standard with photo records, traffic management diagrams and pre/post site condition.
Who It's For
- Landowners with hedge or tree frontage to A/B roads
- Parish councils managing roadside greens
- Highways frameworks needing subcontracted tree support
- Land owners with railway-adjacent tree work
When It's Needed
- Sight-line obstructions reported
- Trees overhanging carriageway
- Highway authority statutory notice received
- Routine vegetation cycle (typically 1–2 years)
What Happens If You Leave It
Working on highways without proper traffic management is illegal and dangerous. Highway authorities can issue statutory notices requiring works; failing to act can result in council doing the work and recovering costs from the landowner — typically at premium rates.
Sight-line obstructions are a documented contributory factor in road traffic collisions. Landowner liability for known obstructions is real.

Rail & Roadside Vegetation Management: The Full Detail
Traffic Management & Chapter 8
All work that affects the carriageway or footway requires Chapter 8 (Safety at Street Works and Road Works) compliant traffic management. We hold NRSWA Unit 002 (Signing, Lighting and Guarding) and design TM appropriate to road type — from simple cone-and-sign for footway work to full lane closure on A roads.
Permits are obtained from the local highway authority before work starts; TM is set, monitored and removed within agreed windows.
Rail-Adjacent Work
Network Rail boundary work has its own approval regime. We don't hold direct Network Rail contractor accreditation but partner with a RISQS-registered firm for any work requiring access to railway-controlled land or working under possession.
Trees on private land overhanging railway corridor can be handled directly with appropriate Network Rail liaison.
Every job is covered by £5m Public Liability Insurance and carried out under method statements and risk assessments tailored to your site.
