What is Hedge Reduction?
Hedge reduction means lowering an overgrown hedge by a substantial amount — typically 1m or more in height, or significant width on the sides. Done correctly, it brings the hedge back into proportion and makes it manageable to trim annually thereafter. Done badly, it can kill the hedge.
Different species respond differently. Yew, beech, hornbeam and privet regenerate well from old wood. Leylandii, Lawson cypress, Western red cedar and most conifers do NOT — cut into brown wood and it stays brown forever. Knowing which species can take which treatment is essential.
Most reduction jobs take a single day for a typical garden boundary. Larger commercial reductions are scoped properly with traffic management or access plans where needed.
Who It's For
- Homeowners with hedges that have grown too tall to manage
- Properties losing light to overgrown boundaries
- Anyone with an Anti-Social Behaviour Act high-hedge complaint
- Commercial sites with overgrown perimeter screens
When It's Needed
- Hedge is over 4–5m and getting taller every year
- Light is being blocked from windows or garden
- Annual trimming has become impractical
- Neighbour complaint or council notice received
What Happens If You Leave It
The High Hedges Act 2003 (Part 8 of the Anti-Social Behaviour Act) means neighbours can apply to the council if your hedge exceeds 2m and blocks reasonable enjoyment of their property. Councils can issue formal notices requiring reduction — and recover their costs from you. Doing it voluntarily, properly, is always cheaper.
The wrong species cut wrong stays brown forever. We've been called to assess leylandii hedges where the previous contractor cut into bare wood — there's no fix except removal and replanting. Always ask first whether your species can take it.

Hedge Reduction: The Full Detail
Species That Reduce Well vs Don't
Excellent regeneration: yew, beech, hornbeam, holly, privet, laurel, hawthorn. These can be cut into bare wood and will reshoot within 1–2 seasons.
Poor / no regeneration: leylandii, Lawson cypress, Western red cedar, Thuja, juniper, most other conifers. Cut into brown wood and it stays brown — the only fix is removal.
For unsuitable species we offer staged reduction (small annual cuts within green growth) or honest advice on removal and replanting.
The High Hedges Act & Neighbour Disputes
The Anti-Social Behaviour Act 2003 lets neighbours formally complain to the council about hedges over 2m of evergreen species that block their reasonable light. Councils issue Remedial Notices requiring reduction — typically to 2–2.5m — and can charge fees of £350+ for processing.
Voluntary reduction before formal complaint is always cheaper, faster and friendlier. We can advise on appropriate heights and species choice if removal and replant is the right answer.
Every job is covered by £5m Public Liability Insurance and carried out under method statements and risk assessments tailored to your site.
Hedge Reduction — Frequently Asked Questions
Can my leylandii be reduced without going brown?+
Only within green growth — typically the outer 30–40cm. Beyond that it stays brown permanently.
How much does hedge reduction cost?+
Typically £200–£800 per job depending on length, height and species. Always quoted fixed-price.
Will the hedge survive?+
On suitable species (yew, beech, etc), yes — and regrow stronger. On conifers, only within green growth.
When's the best time?+
Late winter (Feb–March) for most species, before bird nesting and before spring growth.
What's the legal max height?+
There's no statutory max, but the High Hedges Act lets neighbours challenge anything over 2m of evergreen.
Can you reduce my neighbour's hedge?+
Only with their written permission. We can quote both sides if you agree.
Do you take the clippings?+
Yes — chipped on-site or removed, included in the quote.
How long does it take?+
Most domestic reductions: 1 day. Larger commercial work: 2–3 days.
