    What is Sectional Tree Dismantling?

Sectional dismantling is the controlled, top-down removal of a tree using climbing ropes, harnesses and rigging equipment. Instead of dropping the tree in one piece, the climber ascends, removes the upper canopy first, then works down the trunk in manageable sections — each one lowered safely to a ground crew below.

It's the standard approach for almost every domestic tree job in Staffordshire. Garden boundaries, garages, greenhouses, neighbouring fences and overhead cables make straight felling impractical for most trees over 8 metres in built-up areas.

Done well, sectional dismantling looks slow, deliberate and almost surgical. Done badly, it's how houses get hit, fences get crushed and climbers end up in hospital. The kit, training and discipline behind the rope work is what you're paying for.

    Who It's For

    • Homeowners with mature trees close to the house
    • Properties where access for a MEWP or crane isn't possible
    • Trees overhanging conservatories, sheds or driveways
    • Anywhere overhead power, phone or BT lines are nearby

    When It's Needed

    • There isn't 1.5× the tree's height of clear drop space
    • Targets (buildings, cars, glass) sit within the potential fall zone
    • The tree leans toward something you don't want hit
    • Council, neighbours or insurers require a controlled method statement

What Happens If You Leave It

Trying to fell a tall tree in a small garden is the single most common cause of property damage in domestic tree work. A 15-metre conifer dropped wrong can flatten a fence, smash a greenhouse and take the gutter off a neighbour's house in one go — and no insurer will pay out if the operator wasn't properly qualified.

Sectional dismantling looks expensive on paper, but the alternatives — repair bills, neighbour disputes, insurance excesses — usually dwarf the cost.

Sectional Tree Dismantling: The Full Detail

    Climbing Systems & Rigging Techniques

Our climbers use modern stationary rope systems (SRS) and dynamic moving rope systems (MRS) depending on the tree's structure and the work required. Anchor points are tested before any load is applied, and a separate rigging line is set for any section over about 25kg.

Heavier sections are lowered using a Portawrap or GRCS friction device, controlled by a trained groundie. This lets us drop tonne-rated logs into a 1m² spot on the lawn with no impact damage. Smaller pieces are hand-thrown or speedlined onto a soft landing area.

When We Recommend a Crane or MEWP Instead

If a tree is structurally compromised — fungal infection at the base, large cracks, ash dieback at advanced stages — climbing it isn't safe. In these cases we hire in a mobile elevated work platform (cherry picker) or, occasionally, a small crane to lift sections out from above. We coordinate the hire and include it in your fixed quote.

Every job is covered by £5m Public Liability Insurance and carried out under method statements and risk assessments tailored to your site.

Sectional Tree Dismantling — Frequently Asked Questions

How much more expensive is sectional dismantling vs straight felling?+

Typically 40–80% more, reflecting the extra time, rigging gear and crew skill required. We always quote both methods if both are feasible.

    Will my lawn be damaged?+

No — we use ground mats under any heavy lowering point, and brash is dragged out rather than dropped on grass.

How long does a domestic dismantle take?+

Most jobs are 1 day; very large or complex trees can run to 2–3 days.

Do you work near overhead power lines?+

Yes, with prior coordination and DNO permits where required. We never work within statutory exclusion zones without authorisation.

Is it safe in wet or windy weather?+

We work in light rain but stand down above 25 mph wind gusts at canopy height — safety first, every time.

Do I need to be home?+

Only if access requires it. Many of our clients are at work all day — we just need garden access and a contact number.

Can you do it without my neighbour's permission?+

We can work entirely from your side of the boundary. If we need to enter a neighbour's garden, we ask them ourselves and put it in writing.

    Is your work guaranteed?+

Yes — workmanship is guaranteed and any issues addressed free of charge.
