What is Veteran Tree Care?
Veteran trees — typically 200+ years old, often hollowing, frequently irreplaceable — need a completely different management approach to younger trees. Decay is normal and often beneficial; aggressive pruning is harmful; structural support extends safe life by decades.
We work to David Lonsdale's Veteran Trees: A Guide to Good Management and Helen Read's Veteran Tree Management Handbook. Every veteran intervention is documented with rationale, expected outcome and review date.
Veteran tree care isn't a one-off job. It's a long-term relationship between the tree, the owner and the arborist — usually planned over 10–20 year horizons.
Who It's For
- Estate owners with veteran trees
- Heritage organisations
- Local authorities managing ancient trees
- Conservation charities
When It's Needed
- Tree showing signs of veteran decline (cavities, deadwood)
- Heritage value or SSSI status
- Recent crown failure or storm damage
- Generational handover requires a plan
What Happens If You Leave It
Veteran trees are routinely felled because someone with a chainsaw thinks decay equals danger. In fact, hollow trees are often perfectly safe — and the cavity supports rare invertebrates and bats. Felling an irreplaceable veteran is a permanent decision; getting a second opinion is always worth it.
Standard 'tidy up' arboriculture often kills veterans. Removing all the deadwood, lifting the canopy, taking out epicormic growth — these standard prescriptions for younger trees actively harm veterans by removing essential biological reserves.

Veteran Tree Care: The Full Detail
Why Veteran Trees Are Different
Veterans have completed their growth phase and entered a long, slow decline. They concentrate biological value in cavities, deadwood and decaying heartwood — supporting hundreds of species of invertebrates, fungi, lichens, birds and bats found nowhere else.
Standard arboricultural prescriptions designed for younger trees (full crown lift, complete deadwood removal, tight pruning) destroy this value and stress the tree. Veteran management retains biological complexity while managing public safety in target areas.
Retrenchment Pruning & Phased Reduction
Where a veteran has become structurally hazardous, retrenchment pruning gradually reduces the canopy over multiple cycles, mimicking natural senescence. The tree responds with low, dense regrowth that will eventually become the new canopy — extending safe life by 50+ years.
Every job is covered by £5m Public Liability Insurance and carried out under method statements and risk assessments tailored to your site.

Are you qualified for this work?+
Yes — 15+ years experience plus working knowledge of Lonsdale, Read and Mattheck principles.
What about TPOs?+
Veteran trees are usually protected; we handle TPO applications and work notifications.
