What is Invasive Species Removal?
Invasive non-native plants — Rhododendron ponticum, snowberry, Himalayan balsam, cherry laurel in woodland, sycamore in ancient woodland — outcompete native species and crash biodiversity. Removing them is multi-year work involving mechanical clearance, herbicide stem injection or cut-and-paint, and follow-up monitoring.
We carry out invasive species removal for woodland owners, conservation trusts and estates across Staffordshire. Japanese knotweed is handled via a Property Care Association approved partner (legally required for off-site disposal).
Programmes typically run over 3–5 years to achieve durable control. First-year work delivers visible knock-back; year 2–3 deals with regrowth; years 4–5 monitor and spot-treat.
Who It's For
- Woodland owners with rhododendron or laurel infestations
- Conservation organisations on protected sites
- Estate managers with widespread snowberry or balsam
- Property owners with Japanese knotweed (via partner)
When It's Needed
- Native ground flora has disappeared under invasive cover
- Spread is accelerating year on year
- SSSI or other designated site management requires it
- Property sale being affected by knotweed presence
What Happens If You Leave It
Invasive species spread exponentially. Rhododendron in particular doubles its footprint every 5–7 years. The cost of clearance grows with infestation; early intervention is dramatically cheaper than waiting.
DIY herbicide use is heavily regulated and often counter-productive — wrong product, wrong rate, wrong timing kills non-target species and fails to control the invasive. PA-certified application is more reliable and (for commercial sites) legally required.

Invasive Species Removal: The Full Detail
Rhododendron Ponticum — The Big One
Rhododendron is the worst invasive in UK woodlands. It excludes light, poisons soil to native species, and provides almost no wildlife value. Removal is two-stage: mechanical felling (chainsaw / clearing saw / mulcher) followed by stump treatment or stem injection with glyphosate.
Year 2–3: cut regrowth (less vigorous than original) and re-treat. Year 4–5: monitor and spot-treat any survivors. Native ground flora typically returns within 3–5 years of clearance.
Japanese Knotweed — Why We Use A Partner
Knotweed is classified as 'controlled waste' under the Environmental Protection Act 1990. It cannot be removed off-site without a licensed waste carrier and disposal facility. Treatment programmes typically run 3–5 years using stem injection or foliar application.
We work with a PCA-approved knotweed specialist who provides 5- or 10-year insurance-backed guarantees acceptable to mortgage lenders. We coordinate the work; they deliver it.
Every job is covered by £5m Public Liability Insurance and carried out under method statements and risk assessments tailored to your site.
Invasive Species Removal — Frequently Asked Questions
Can rhododendron be killed in one go?+
No — multi-year programme is essential for durable control. Single-pass clearance regenerates within 2–3 years.
What about Japanese knotweed?+
Handled via our PCA-approved partner with insurance-backed guarantees.
Is the work licensed?+
Herbicide application is PA1/PA6 certified; knotweed disposal via licensed carrier.
How much does it cost?+
Highly variable by area and species. Free site survey and quote.
Are grants available?+
Some FC and Defra schemes cover invasive removal. We can advise.
Will native plants come back?+
Yes — typically within 3–5 years of canopy clearance.
Can you handle Himalayan balsam?+
Yes — annual cutting before seed-set is the most effective approach.
Do you treat invasive trees too?+
Sycamore in ancient woodland can be controlled via ring-barking or felling and stump treatment.
