What is Stump Removal & Grinding?

Stump grinding is the fastest and least disruptive way to deal with a tree stump. A purpose-built grinder reduces the stump and main roots to chips below ground level, leaving the area ready for turfing, paving or replanting within hours rather than the weeks of digging out.

We carry both narrow-access machines (650mm wide — fits through standard garden gates) and larger trailer-mounted grinders for big stumps and commercial work. Most domestic stumps are ground in 30–90 minutes including arisings tidied.

Grinding depth is typically 6–8 inches below ground for lawn reinstatement, or 12 inches for replanting. Deeper grinding available for foundations or paving projects.

    Who It's For

    • Anyone with a stump left after tree removal
    • Homeowners reclaiming garden space
    • Builders preparing sites for hard landscaping
    • Insurers managing subsidence remediation

    When It's Needed

    • Stump is in the way of a planned lawn, patio or planting
    • Stump is sprouting suckers and won't die naturally
    • Honey fungus risk needs to be reduced
    • Tripping hazard on a managed lawn or path

What Happens If You Leave It

Leaving a stump to rot naturally takes 5–10 years for most species, attracting honey fungus, suckering shoots and unsightly fungal growth in the meantime. Stump killer chemicals are unreliable and often banned in residential gardens.

Digging a stump out by hand is back-breaking, takes a full day per stump and leaves a crater needing back-fill. Grinding is 90% cheaper and finished in an hour or two.

Stump Removal & Grinding: The Full Detail

    Grinding vs Digging Out

Grinding chips the stump and major roots to 6–12 inches below grade, leaving smaller fibrous roots in place to decompose naturally. Faster, cheaper, less disruptive — suitable for 95% of domestic situations.

Full excavation is only needed where deeper foundations will be built (e.g. extension footings) or where every last root must be removed (e.g. bamboo, knotweed). It's significantly more expensive and disruptive — we offer it only when genuinely required.

    Underground Services & Stump Position

Grinders cannot operate over electric, water, gas or telecoms cables — we always check service locations before grinding. Where stumps are within 1m of known services, we use hand-clearance methods instead.

Stumps in tarmac, concrete or paving can be ground but the surrounding hard surface may need patching afterwards — we'll quote both options.

Every job is covered by £5m Public Liability Insurance and carried out under method statements and risk assessments tailored to your site.
