What is Utility Line Clearance?
Trees growing into overhead lines are a leading cause of unplanned outages — and a serious safety risk. Specialist clearance work requires coordination with the Distribution Network Operator (DNO), specific safety procedures and operators trained to ENA Engineering Recommendation G55.
We carry out utility line clearance for landowners, councils and direct DNO contracts across Staffordshire. Work is planned around outage windows where required and documented to network compliance standards.
Every job starts with line identification, voltage confirmation and exclusion zone establishment. We never approach lines without proper authorisation.
Who It's For
- Landowners with trees affecting overhead lines on their property
- DNOs needing clearance contractor support
- Councils managing roadside and footpath line risk
- Telecoms operators with cable vegetation issues
When It's Needed
- Tree branches are within statutory clearance distances of lines
- Outage caused by tree contact
- DNO has issued statutory notice for clearance
- Routine maintenance cycle (typically 3–5 years)
What Happens If You Leave It
Working near overhead lines without proper procedures kills people. Statutory minimum approach distances exist for a reason — induced electrocution can occur even without direct contact at higher voltages.
Cutting a tree into a live line causes outages affecting hundreds of customers, fault recovery costs in the thousands, and regulatory penalties for the contractor responsible.

Utility Line Clearance: The Full Detail
Voltage Levels & Approach Distances
Low voltage (under 1kV — typical street wiring): minimum approach 1m without isolation, 0.6m with insulating gloves and arm coverings. 11kV (rural distribution): 3m without isolation, 1m with full PPE and live-line working approval.
Higher voltages (33kV+): isolation always required; we don't undertake work without confirmed dead-line or live-line working specialist subcontract.
DNO Coordination & Permits
Most planned line clearance is coordinated with the DNO (in our area, National Grid Electricity Distribution / formerly Western Power). Outage windows are agreed in advance; permits-to-work issued for the duration; lines isolated and proved dead before approach.
Emergency clearance after a fault may require live-line specialist support. We hold contacts with both the DNO and approved live-line contractors.
Every job is covered by £5m Public Liability Insurance and carried out under method statements and risk assessments tailored to your site.
Utility Line Clearance — Frequently Asked Questions
Can you work near power lines safely?+
Yes — to ENA G55 standards, with appropriate isolation or live-line authorisation.
Who arranges the outage?+
We do — DNO coordination is part of the service.
What voltage levels do you work on?+
LV and 11kV with G55 procedures; higher voltages via isolation or specialist subcontractor.
Is this safe?+
Yes when done correctly — strict procedures and trained operators are non-negotiable.
How much does it cost?+
Highly variable — DNO outage costs add significantly. Free quote on inspection.
What if a tree's about to fall on a line?+
Emergency call to the DNO first to isolate the line; then we attend. Don't approach the tree.
Are you insured for utility work?+
Fully, with utility work specifically declared in our policy.
Do you work for the DNO directly?+
Yes — both direct contracts and as approved subcontractor on framework arrangements.
