What is Stump Grinding (Standalone)?
Stump grinding as a standalone service — for stumps left behind by previous tree work, by builders or by storms years ago. We bring the right size machine, grind to depth and tidy up.
Stumps slowly become eyesores: suckering shoots, fungal growth, tripping hazards. Grinding removes them in under an hour for most domestic sizes, leaving the area ready for turfing, paving or replanting.
We carry both narrow-access machines (650mm — fits through standard garden gates) and larger trailer-mounted grinders for big stumps and commercial work.

What Happens If You Leave It
Stumps don't go away on their own — most species take 5–10 years to rot, attracting honey fungus and producing suckers in the meantime. Grinding is fast, cheap and permanent.
Digging out a stump with a spade is back-breaking, takes a full day and leaves a crater. Grinding is 90% cheaper and finished in an hour.

Old Stumps vs Fresh Stumps
Old stumps (5+ years) often have softened wood that grinds quickly. Fresh stumps are harder going. Either way the cost is similar; old stumps may include more root mass spreading from the base, requiring slightly wider grinding zone.
Stumps with active suckering need crown removal AND grinding to prevent regrowth — the suckers come from root buds we can't easily reach. Some species (sycamore, lime, willow) re-sucker even after grinding and may need follow-up treatment.
Underground Services & Hard Surfaces
We always check for known service locations before grinding. Stumps within 1m of services are hand-cleared instead.
Stumps in tarmac, concrete or paving can be ground but the surrounding hard surface may need patching afterwards — quoted separately.
